How to scan a VIN barcode

  1. Locate a barcode on the label or paperwork you are authorized to use.
  2. Choose an image with the whole barcode visible, including space on either side. Or allow camera access and hold the code steady in the frame.
  3. Review the extracted VIN. Copy it or make a fresh internal barcode label.

Barcode scanning and reading text are different

This tool reads encoded barcodes. A photograph of printed VIN characters without a barcode needs optical character recognition (OCR), which is not included in this version. You can enter the VIN manually instead. Our guide to where to find your VIN shows where it appears on the car, the title and the registration card.

What happens to my photo?

The barcode reader runs in your browser. This tool does not upload your photo or VIN. Camera processing stops when a VIN is captured, you press Stop camera, or you leave the page.

Not getting a result?

Try a sharper image with even lighting and less glare. Include the entire code, keep it straight, and avoid a very small crop. You can test the reader with a PNG from our VIN barcode generator.
